James M. Syta is an associate at the Albany, New York office of Schmeiser, Olsen & Watts LLP. He specializes in preparing and prosecuting highly complex patent applications in software and other computer related areas. He has been an associate at Schmeiser, Olsen & Watts since 2004. Jim has enjoyed counseling and representing a diverse group of clients, including multinational technology corporations, Internet based startup and other small companies, a New York State government department, and many individual inventors.
The several hundred patent applications Jim has prepared and prosecuted address a variety of information technology areas, including computer & processor architecture, data mining, machine learning, data analytics, natural language processing, cybersecurity, online gaming, digital image processing, mobile device user interfaces, software quality assurance, e-commerce transaction management, computer network security, information extraction systems, storage area network management, telecommunications systems, data security on wireless devices, and field programmable gate arrays.
In addition to preparing patent applications, Jim’s extensive intellectual property experience includes strategic IP counseling, software licensing, filing and prosecuting trademark applications, preparing patentability opinions, and providing IP litigation support.
As a summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of SUNY at Buffalo, Jim earned a Bachelor’s degree in computer science. He also holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University at Buffalo School of Law and a Master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Virginia. Prior to joining Schmeiser, Olsen & Watts LLP, Jim was an associate at an intellectual property law firm in Albany, NY. Before practicing law, Jim was a technical writer at Praxair, Inc. (formerly Union Carbide Industrial Gases) in Tonawanda, NY. Jim loves skiing with his family and visiting his home town of Buffalo, NY.
